There seems to have been a tradition in the Mills family, of naming the
firstborn son after the paternal grandfather. (It was probably common
practice in many families, from what I see in genealogical sites.) This was
followed quite consistently in the 18/19 C. But my father was given a name
from the maternal side. Probably not by conscious decision, I happened to
get my grandfather's name, Roger, with my father's name (Frederick) as a
middle.
Actually they were hoping for or expecting another girl, and I was to be
named Barbara. ("Henceforth, I wish to be called Lois"-- immortal line.)
Well, that didn't quite work out, though in some vague sense, they _did_ get
another girl.
