I'm completely opposite: if I try to invent a word without any context
my brain fails to see the point and gives up. If I do force it to come
up with something, it's usually something that I have to throw away
later because it's simply Wrong.

For me, things-to-translate don't have to be culturally *neutral*
(which is impossible anyway) but culturally *appropriate*; if something
is culturally inappropriate, for instance if it's about computers, I
just skip it. You don't *have* to do absolutely everything!
And if you want to translate words and not sentences, why not take the
words of your choice out of the sentences and translate those?
