Expired messages are indeed completely deleted; it is however not based on
the message's age itself, but rather, if a discussion thred gets no replies
in some period of time, it is deleted as a whole. The threshold for this
varies by subforum; IIRC two weeks for casual chatter, two months for actual
and conlinguistics; and there *is* also an arkive forum where especially
good/informativ threds can be moovd to be saved from this fate. Ordinary
conlang discussion - "so how do you like my morphology?" - however will be
purged, so the forum is no place to use for keeping notes (that's what the
conlang wikis & personal webpages are for, tho), and (which I find the
larger fault) you can't check back on if something has been discussed five
years ago ... Then again, techier discussion seems to mostly take place over
here while the ZBB is more focused on help on hammering out details. Must be
related to the different proportions of engelangers/artlangers.

Jörg, Sai, yes, you were among my half-dozen. I suppose many more may be
just lurking at either; that probably applies to me, too, most of the time.
(I follo lots of forums and mailing lists, and at any giv'n time I'm a few
months behind on several.)

Fair enuff; I was reading some "why would anyone use forums?" vibe into
that, sorry.
