I definitely agree with you there. If I were to write a foreign-language
instruction book for English-speakers, I would include some example words in
English (and any other familiar languages) that have the sound, and an IPA
representation for those who are ready to move on. Besides, there might be
someone (like me a few years back) who's interested in being
linguistics-literate, and gets introduced to phonetics this way.
