Well, World War I met those criteria as well and remember, Japan was
a combatant in that war as well. But your point is taken, WW2 certainly
met the criteria in a more vigorous manner.
Obconlang, my Nowan people were neutral in WW I although they did fight
a brief war with the Japanese soon there after. In WW2 they fought
against the Japanese but stayed on good terms with the Germans through
out the war. A fact which caused no small amount of bitterness the-n
and afterwards. In spite of having a common enemy, they only loosely
cooperated with the US and basically not at all with the British. They
invaded Hokkaido in 1945 and were preparing to do the same to Honshu
when the bombs were dropped by the US. It was good for all that they
did not invade the main island. Losses on both sides would have been
much heavier than they had been in relatively lightly defended Hokkaido.
Nowadays, the Nowans get along famously with the Japanese, the British,
and still, the Germans, but have a fair amount of friction with the US,
Russians, and the French.
