<rueful look> SFWA has word-count definitions of "short story,"
"novella," "novelette" and "novel," though I only remember than short
story is < 7500 words and novel is > 40,000 words. I don't know how
common this division is outside of sf/f, but you do occasionally have to
be familiar with it when looking at magazine submissions guidelines.
