Incidentally, at the Versailles Peace conference after WWI, the European
allies had been prepared to hand over control of Constantinople and
the surrounding straits to the United States as victors' spoils. But
it was tied to the US ratifying the peace accords, and the Senate refused
to ratify it for President Wilson, so the US never got the new colony.
How 'bout an alternative universe where the US not only signs the pact,
but keeps the colony for decades or centuries? Maybe something interesting
linguistically can come of that.
