Isn't that "the latter"? "Red Irish", as far as I know, is the
light-skinned and freckled redhead type that everyone immediately
identifies as "Irish"; "Black Irish", for me, means very dark hair,
light skin and (optionally) startling blue eyes. Like Geraldine
McGowan, if that rings a bell for you.
