In the Southeastern US, it goes even further than that; "Coke" is
used generically for any soft drink, even non-colas. ("What kind of
Coke would you like?" "Sprite.") Some would say that it extends even to
iced tea, but that's hyperbole. :)
My wife was once chastized when, while waiting tables at a Pizza Hut to work
her way through college, she asked a gentleman if he would like a Coke.
See, Pizza Hut was owned by Pepsi, and therefore serves only Pepsi
products - and the gentleman in question was a visiting Pepsi
executive. Whups. :)
