There's no hard and fast difference, but prototypically,
a philologist is somehow who works with dead languages
and examines texts to try to figure out how better to
understand language as a vehicle of literature. Linguists,
on the other hand, tend to be interested in spoken languages
and seek to make an account for their structure. In reality,
there's a lot of overlap.
