The reason I asked: In my diploma it is written "philologist, teacher of English" &c. Though I feel myself as a "linguist". Still in Russian both {filólog} and {lingvíst} look like synonyms. And we have one more word, of local origin: {jazykovéd} lit. "the one who studies/knows language"... Yitzik
