Originally I used /E/ for Proto-Finno-Ugric (PFU) _ä_, not for
Finnish. We don't know the exact quality of PFU _ä_, therefore I think
it's better to use a cardinal vowel from the IPA chart (and /E/ is much
more recognizable even for Uralist than X-SAMPa /{/ or CXS /&/).
In Uralist notation _e*_ (small epsilon) is used only when it's in
opposition with _ä_, otherwise simply _ä_ is used for both X-SAMPA /E/
and /{/. (The same is true for FUPA _o_ = /o, O/ vs. "open o" = /O/.)
