Hmm, I have quite the opposite perception. I find [Y] quite ugly, whereas
[y] is soothing and smooth.
I also find [a] more pleasant than [&]. [1] Everyone to his own tastes, I
guess.
[1] By which I mean [{] in the "official" X-SAMPA (ae-ligature).
