If only I could think that ... ;-) Very often, when I meet someone for
the first time, something like the following invariably comes up:
Other Person: So, where are you from?
Me: Pensacola (or Pensacola, Florida)
O: Really? You don't sound like it.
OR
O: Really? I didn't think they talked that way there.
OR
O: Really? You sound like you're from [insert country of choice]
I've heard Germany, Russia, Australia, Britain, Eastern Europe
I have a kind of unplaceable accent; perhaps there are traits of all
those different regions, and different people pick up on different
traits? The story behind that is, or so my Mom has hypothesized that
this is its origin, is that when I was a little kid, I had some speech
impediments, and my mother took me to a speech therapist, and I must've
picked up her accent, whatever it was! So I don't even *know* what my
own accent is! :-)
Speaking of pronunciation ... When's the phonetic relay going to start?
