I was in the same boat not too long ago.  Perhaps you'll find the following
two sites useful:

    http://www.ling.hf.ntnu.no/ipa/full/
    http://www.i-foo.com/~kturtle/misc/xsamchart.gif

The first is an interactive web page that has the IPA chart with sound
links that you can play to hear what sound each symbol represents.  Once
you've got that down (and good luck with some of the stranger ones!) go to
the second site, which has X-SAMPA characters overlaid on the IPA chart.
