Okay. Seems needlessly restrictive, though. In AmE, "sandwich"
extends even to completely non-bread-related items, such as Oreo
brand sandwich cookies, ice cream sandwiches, and, of course,
"Weird Al" Yankovic's infamous "Twinkie-wiener sandwich"
in the movie "UHF": take a Hostess Twinkie, slit it lengthwise,
insert a hot dog, and spray with Cheez Whiz(R). I was once
young enough and stupid enough to actually try this alleged
delicacy, and I don't think my stomach has ever fully recovered.
In any case, if you have three food items arranged in layers such
that the outer two layers are the same and do not meet on both
sides, that's a sandwich. :)
