In the United States, they're called "garbagemen."
Back in the 1970s, they started to refer to themselves
as "Sanitation Engineers." Now there already was a
group of real engineers called Sanitation Engineers.
They were the ones who designed sewage treatment
plants. So they had to change their name to
"Environmental Engineers."
