Hmm, I haven't encountered a dialect that collapses them.

They are similar in many regions, yes, and the spelling mistakes are due to the similarity (but then, young pupils often cannot analytically distinguish long and short vowels although they are phonemic). I'm used to mistakes of that kind from primary school. But I would not know any dialect that has no distinction at all. **Henrik
