Translating titles for films
From: | Carlos Thompson <chlewey@...> |

Many times when a movie is shown on theatres, the titles are not exactly =
the
title of the original movie, nor a direct translation of the original tit=
le.
Examples: the name in Spanish of "The Sound of Music" was "La novicia reb=
elde"
(the rebel noun) or the name of the animated "101 Dalmatians" where "La n=
oche de
las narices fr=EDas" (the cold noses' night).
Even a Cuban film titled "Para Diego, con amor" (For Diego with love) whe=
re
_translated_ in Colombia as "Fresa y chocolate" (chocolate and strawberry=
).
There are many reasons: no direct translation, cultural problems, some ot=
her
movie called that way... like "Die Hard" -> "Duro de matar" (Hard to kill=
), if
there were then another movie called "Hard to kill"... how would it be
translated?
I propose as another translation exercise to translate the titles of movi=
es (or
books, or TV series, etc.) and we could begin with the nominees for the A=
cademy
Awards:
