I *think* I've heard it used of women. It wouldn't be strange after a time, considering words like _boludo_ referring to the same thing (though insulting) that can be of either gender now. The genderless reference of a typical sentence with this phrase (_Hay que tener huevos para..._ "One has to have...") probably helps it being applied to anyone. --Pablo Flores
