Yes, we experienced that problem painfully in the Sixth Conlang Translation Relay. Two rings had to deal with the very same text in Uatakassí. Remarkably, whereas the second ring from the beginning till the end remained very close to the original, the first ring underwent far-reaching modifications with almost every translation. As a result, somewhere half-way during the process the text had completely lost its coherence. In this stage some people unfortunately had to drop out because they couldn't deal with the text anymore. Curiously, the results of ring are much more interesting to watch and compare than those of the second. To avoid this kind of trouble in the future, it was accepted as a rule that translations for the Seventh Relay, currently going on, must be coherent internally. If a participant doesn't understand an expression, he/she is rather supposed to use his/her fantasy than to come up with something which might be a perfect literal translation but doesn't make sense within the context. I'm curious in how far this objective will be realized in practice. Jan ===== "Originality is the art of concealing your source." - Franklin P.
