A lot of the problem is to do with the tricky decision of how literal
a translation to provide -- whether to try to translate the source
as exactly as possible, or whether to produce something more natural-
sounding, and whether to translate what is actually said, or whether
to instead translate what one guesses the intended meaning to be,
which is particularly tricky with the decontextualized texts that
form the basis of translation exercises. A further problem is that
there is no mechanism for capturing mistakes, so a mistake at one
stage get magnified at later stages.
