Not a native, but I've always heard [mA~?kleIR].....My birthplace used to
flummox a lot on non-midwesterners-- Sioux Falls [su:'fQlz] (South Dakota);
County Minnehaha [mIni'hAhA] was always good for a laugh too. Sioux Falls,
even when it had only 30-40,000 souls, could boast of being the largest city
in 5 states; now with over 100,000, it still can. On her last visit there
in 1985, my mother-- already a little dotty-- wondered, "what do all these
people do?"
