This is the timescale used in Joan Vinge's _Heaven Chronicles<, which
are set in an asteroid belt. On asteroids, neither the period of
rotation (day) nor revolution (year) is of much interest, as it
differs markedly from one asteroid to another.
If you have to wait more than a kilosec to meet someone, you
get annoyed (the settlers are Anglo-American!).
A megasec is a reasonable amount of time to get a simple project
done at one's job.
A marriage or other relationship that lasts a gigasec is doing well
indeed.
