They can't exist without a verb near to them. You can't say *"Après je, le
déluge", you have to say: "Après moi, le déluge" (nice expression BTW :)) ).
They are the real agreement marks of person and number on the verb, since the
endings have nearly disappeared from the spoken language. That's why when I
say: "Moi, Christophe, je crée des langues", you're obliged to use the 1st
person clitic "je", despite the fact that the subject is present and
sufficiently marked. "je" is really part of the conjugation of the verb, it's
not an independent word.
