I do that also...but I see it as self-protection rather than as a way of
getting accepted. This particularly applies to non-mainstream activities
like conlanging, programming just for fun (which I also have done), and
reading science books just for fun. (Part of my current light :) reading
list is Alan Guth, _The Inflationary Universe_, which is not heavily
mathematical but goes into some recent notions about the interfaces
between quantum theories and the origin of the universe.)
