well, the society described in les liaisons
dangereuses is certainly pretty licentious, and i
presume it's not _too_ far from the reality of the
day. so maybe the reputation has some of its origins
there
then there's the romantic poetry. is it the chanson
de roland or something ? maybe that has something to
do with it. certainly the mythology of post-conquest
england is more romantic than that of pre-
