_Pithecanthropus_ was the former genus into which _Homo erectus_ was
originally placed until the decision was made to move it to _Homo_.
_Pithecanthropus._ is no longer considered a valid genus.
There is now talk of moving _Pan troglodytes_, _P. paniscus_, and
_Gorilla gorilla_ into _Homo_ as well, eliminating both genera completely.
