The modern English version of this term is "Shock". Not the electrical sort,
but meaning a (vaguely demonic) spiritual presence, bogle, etc. In this part
of the world we have a ghostly black dog called "Black Shuck" who has been
seen on numerous occasions. In the West of the county in the Fens, a local
brweery has him as their logo, and a marathon held at Bungay
(Norfolk-Suffolk border) is called the "Black Dog marathon", named after
him.
