The umlauts, yes... I only realised how pervasive they actually were when I started translating stuff. You can be reading some text without an umlaut in site and then, whoomph, dots everywhere! The umlauts cause the vowel to sort-of move to the front and sort-of lengthen. My thoughts on it is that whatever language it's descended from used this to denote some grammatical functions. Mutation is something that seems to have happened in the parent language too.
