Not necessarily. It depends on what the culture considers to be the primary function of families--to produce children, or to raise children. In Tokana society, the term "kelesatha" (= "family", lit. "those under one roof") is applied to any group of two or more adults who have chosen to raise children together. It doesn't matter whether the children are the biological offspring of members of the kelesatha, or are adopted, as long as the belong to the same matrilineal clan as one of the members. Homosexual couples are allowed to form kelesatha--usually in partnership with a heterosexual couple, but sometimes on their own. Matt.
