It was and is a UNIX text-editor. I grew up on "vi" which was
short for "visual." It used to be that in UNIX, when you
wrote something, you never saw it as a paragraph: you worked
"line by line," and if you had to edit your work, you called
up each line and gave it commands. We all took this completely
for granted. This was the seventies, remember. Before some
of you were even born!
Then when "vi" came out we thought it was the
greatest thing. Imagine! your paragraph on screen, and a
set of memorizable commands enacted with the ctrl key that
moved the cursor around. You could "visualize" your text!
UNIX-PINE, which I use for my university account, uses a
text-editor called PICO. Not nearly so versatile.
