Sumimasen could be appropriate, if the recipient
somehow fells s/he is bothering/disturbing the speaker
by "forcing" the speaker to say happy birthday.  I'd
say, from my own experiences, arigatou (thanks) would
be sufficient.  Of course, if towards elders or in a
formal situation, you want to say "thank you" and
hence arigatou gozaimasu.  Your understanding of
sumimasen, however, seems quite good!  From all that
manga-reading, eh?

Very kind of you and surprising that you say that
about my conlang, Vyh.!  Unfortunately, this fetal
conlang is already in a state of decay due to the
inability of its creator to upkeep it and nurture it
to more :-/ .  Anyhow, you are very correct that a
consistent distinctiveness runs within the language -
if anything, at least in the written form (you all
know I'm not one to care much for pronunciation, I'm
mainly interested in scripts and written form).  As
for replying to "happy birthday" in Vyh., I've not
thought about it - I think "thanks" (Vyh. glhL) or
"thank you" (Vyh. glhL-czosh) should be fine too, but
I'll think about it.

Well, that's my one and only email reply for the past
2 weeks and this week... Got a rendezvous in 30 mins;
got to run and leave my already-700 emails sit!  Now
that I'm officially in the process of applying to take
& study for the Series 7 Exam as well as
Japanese-equivalent Shouken-Gaimuin Shiken for the
securities industry, I may be going "no mail" shortly
here!  But I'm always available if emailed directly
(if there's a reason that warrants one's direct
emailing).
