I use semantic rather than syntactic markup. :) That is, I use *...*
for emphasis, but _..._ for non-emphatic cases that might be
italicized if typeset, such as titles (where an underline would be an
appropriate typewritten substitute).
However, I try to avoid using *...* on this list in particular,
because the linguistic convention of using a single prefixed * to
denote an unattested form is quite common here, so there's the
potential for confusion. For similar reasons, the convention of using
/.../ for italics, which is popular in some circles, is a poor choice
on this list.
