The usual standard I know is: - *asterisks* mark emphasised text. - _underscores_ mark other uses of italics. - *asterisks*, further, are used when quoting bold text to maintain the boldness. In a plain text environment, there's generally little call for bolded text. ISTR we've recently discussed this anyway. -- Tristan.
