That's actually a weird/fun thing in Swedish. _Pojkvän_ means 'boyfriend', while _killkompis_ can only mean 'friend who is a boy, male friend'. _Pojke_ and _kille_ are synonyms (well, of course there are some differences, but both means 'boy, guy'). Similarly, _Flickvän_ is 'girlfriend', but _tjejkompis_ is 'friend who is a girl, female friend'. _Flicka_ and _tjej_ are the female equivalents of _pojke_ and _kille_. So, I have lots of _tjejkompisar_, but I have only one _flickvän_, although if you break down the words in parts they mean the same thing. Flicka/tjej means 'girl' and vän/kompis means 'friend'.
