This is indeed correct, and becoming ever more evident in these days as
Pres. Dubya and his Ultra-Rightwing and Religious Right supporters make
every effort to turn back the clock.

However, I read where Canada has been given 60 days to extend marriage to
same-sex couples by court order of their national appeals court.

Actually, what most states have found is that they have had no definition
for marriage outside the rights which it bestows on the pair entering into
marriage. Hence their recent craptapular head-long  rushes to add "one man
and one woman" to their state consitutions.
