    Whilst growing up in Houston, Texas, a common phrase I heard was "I have
dibs on ____" (blank = someone's name) and this usually meant a form of
possessive enemy-ship as well as some seriously harmful intentions (usually a
Texas-style "blood-grudge").
    And it was not uncommon for bestfriends to claim dibs on their friend's
enemies or even for mere acquitances to do so to cement a bond of friendship
(or to create a debt).
    I think this particular subculture of violence in Texas has deep roots in
several historical periods and cultures (Native American, Spanish, Mexican,
French/New Orleans, frontier gunfighter Republic of Texas, oil boomtown &
honkytonk Texas, etc.)
    Bumpersticker I saw recently here in California: "Don't mess with
Texas... They breed 'em Mean."
