I've always heard/said, "tomar fotos," "take photos." Nowadays "tomar"
widely means "to drink." There is a line in the Catholic Mass taken
from the Last Supper: "take and drink, etc." In this case, "tomar"
cannot be used for "drink" so the line is rendered: "tomen y beben" so
there is still some feeling of the meaning "to take."
I should think that in English the wild card word is "to get."
