It's odd to think that 'thou' is generally considered more formal then
'you.' In fact, what came to be 'you' started as the formal form of the
second-person pronoun. There are not actually two different forms, but
it was common to use the plural form when addressing an authority
figure. It is much like Spanish's usage of 'vosotros.' Even though it
is the familiar form of the pronoun, it is considered out-dated and too
formal in most of the Spanish-speaking regions save a few in Spain.
