Hmmm, interesting question.
I name pets - e.g. "Harrisson" and "Elspeth" flow easier (to my mind) and
are less isolating than saying "the hedgehog" and "the Brasilian zebrea-knee
tarantula". I've neither dog nor cat right now, but woiuld name them.
Perhaps naming them also signifies family membership for me? or at least
interaction? "The cat" or "the dog", "the child" are terms I use when
something destructive, messy. or annoying has happened.
I have never named plants, nor have I ever named cars, even though that
is/was quite popular where I was reared.
My partner named our house "The Bearony". Considering there's an official
registry for this in the USA, it must be a somewhat common phenomena.
