Does *that* ever look like a translation exercise. ;) Note that my conlang, Asha'ille, primarily marks closeness (friendship-wise, not location-wise) rather than gender. I'm just going to arbitrarily decide that I am equally close to all these he's being discussed.
> 1a. He sang and danced. > 1b. He sang and then danced.
1a. Jha'sshavpeith jha'mmav. 1b. Jha'sshavpeith t'vesik jha'mmav.
> 2a. He1 sang and he2 danced. > 2b. He1 sang and then he2 danced.
2a. Jha'sshavpeith t'ves jha'mmav geithda. 2b. Jha'sshavpeith t'vesik jha'mmav geithda.
> 3a. He1 said that he1 sang and he1 danced. > 3b. He1 said that he1 sang and then he1 danced.
3a. Shavpeith ne jha'sshavon jha'mmavon. 3b. Shavpeith ne jha'sshavon t'vesik jha'mmavon.
> 4a. He1 said that he1 sang and he2 danced. > 4b. He1 said that he1 sang and then he2 danced.
4a. Shavpeith ne jha'sshavon t'ves jha'mmavon geithda k'. 4b. Shavpeith ne jha'ssahvon t'vesik jha'mmavon geithda k'.
> 5a. He1 said that he2 sang and he1 danced. > 5b. He1 said that he2 sang and then he1 danced.
5a. Shavpeith ne jha'sshavon geithda t'ves jha'mmavon geithsa k'. 5b. Shavpeith ne jha'sshavon geithda t'vesik jha'mmavon geithsa k'.
> 6a. He1 said that he2 sang and he3 danced. > 6b. He1 said that he2 sang and then he3 danced.
6a. Pas shav geithsa ne jha'sshavon geithda t'ves jha'mmavon geithga k'. 6a. Shavpeith ne jha'sshavon geithda t'ves jha'mmavon geithga k'. 6b. Shavpeith ne jha'ssavon geithda t'vesik jha'mmavon geithga k'. In translating these sentences, I discovered that serial verbs are *stylistically* only allowed when the actor is the same. Grammatically, there are no such restrictions: 1a. Jha'sshavpeith t'ves jha'mmav. 2a. Jha'sshavpeith jha'mmav geithda. Yet it turns out that the following is again stylistically okay: 2a. Pas jha'sshav geithsa jha'mmav geithda. How many of you have style rules, independent of grammaticality? -- AA
