Actually, depending on the text, sometimes I can make out the general meaning of written Dutch -- and then, sometimes not. the 12-hour clock is just

Oh, don't get me started on Daylight Savings Time. Now that I have two children who don't go to bed easily while it is still very light outside, I could wish that I was living in Indiana again. (Indiana doesn't use Daylight Savings Time.) On the bright side, this summer I read _The Hobbit_, _Lord of the Rings_, and _The Silmarillion_ aloud to my children while we waited for it to get dark. I didn't want them outside anytime near dusk because of the West Nile Virus, so we ended up reading until after 9pm on nights within a month of the solstice. It's a little better now that it's getting dark earlier. Isidora
