Yes, I am that Pete Bleackley (I resurrected my old nickname Quantum to
establish the identification beyond doubt.)
Every now and then I check Google Groups to see what's going on.
Unfortunately, about two years into my Ph.D. I found that increasing
real-life commitments were not leaving me the time to keep up with afp, so
I decided to "softly and suddenly vanish away". I felt it best not to draw
attention to my departure lest it trigger meta-threads. I've always been
interested in languages, and had done some conlanging on-and-off since I
was about twelve. However, it's only recently that I've begun to seriously
pursue it as a hobby. On afp my interest in languages was confined mainly
to Latin and Latatian (ficcinus toastatus vultisne?)

There was a considerable time lapse between my departure from afp and my
joining conlang. In my case, what happened was that I had an Idea for a
fantasy novel (I'm still working on it). I decided that I wanted to have a
convincing language for magical spells in it. While searching the web for
ideas, I discovered the existence of a conlanging community and decided to
become part of it.
