My story is very similar to Kou's-- I got interested in languages in genl.
very early on. I had invented a couple languages in high school, bought
various grammars (Esperanto, Sanskrit, Portuguese, Swedish, Catalan)--then
college and other forms of Real Life intervened, i.e. work then grad school
and my degree in linguistics. Along in the 70s I started reading a lot of
Sci Fi, especially Le Guin, later Tolkien, and saw that invented languages
had at least a literary use (never got seriously into Tolkien's work). Kash
and Gwr (and their planet) were conceived in the 70s thanks to Le Guin; then
another hiatus until I finally broke down and got a computer in 1999. Once
online, one of the first searches I did via Yahoo was for "invented
languages" and was amazed. That led to the old Langmaker mailing list, which
in turn-- thanks to Pablo Flores-- led to this List in 2000 or 2001.

Seems to me the term derives from this list and our use of ir as a verb/noun
~derived agent-noun........
