Similarly, there is Newark, New Jersey /'nu r=k/ vs. Newark, Delaware
/nu'Ark/. Supposedly, this distinction was devised by railroad conductors
in order to avoid confusing passengers.
Likewise, we have Houston Street /'howst@n/ in New York City,
but the city of Houston /hjust@n/ in Texas, named after two
different people.
