[C] to me neither sounds nor feels anything like [x]; I was surprised when I learned that they're allophones in German. To me [C] sounds a lot like [S] and a bit like [s`] -- Jim Henry Conlang fluency survey -- there's still time to participate before I analyze the results and write the article
