An interesting discussion. What determines that Speaker A learns/retains
old expressions, while Speakers B, C,...N do not?

Furthermore, they tend to get recycled--- neat, neat-ee-o ~neat-o were
common when I was around 12-14 (middish-late 1940s), then utterly unheard
for years AFAICR until fairly recently.

When will "groovy" return?

I knew it because I read it ....And as I said, no one in my surroundings (including people way above their 50s) knew the expression at all, not even in passive knowledge. ....As I said, probably 95% of the population doesn't know what a PPH is, and the remaining 5% probably find the expression out-dated (like I do).

Never heard that one

Well, never heard that at least... --------------------------------------- OK, Fellow Americans under ....40? (And no fair googling...........) What's "4F"? or "1A" and/or "2S"? Define: Bee's knees. Cat's pajamas ~Cat's meow. Catbird seat (Someone on Conlang, or on their website, has used "okey-doke", which my mother used to say back in the 40s-- I never did, it sounded so archaic!! Another of her favorites was "swell-elegant", which is transparent at least.) For the bibulous, ever had a--- Bronx? Sidecar? Pink Lady? When was the last time you ordered, or were offered, a highball? (Or merely used that word in any of its senses...?) How many have seen a real live functioning Hudson, Packard, Nash, Studebaker, De Soto--- how many of you are asking "Who??"* What is/was Fluid Drive? Hydramatic? Do we still know what was a "Three-ring circus"? (I have barely begun to plumb the depths of my memory) __________________ * Not to give it away, but: How many of us have actually ridden in one?
