almost everyone I know can correctly situate Washington, Paris, Berlin,
Tokyo, and Beijing.

I'll deny it. How many Europeans know where Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbaine,
Darwin, and Perth are? Just about everyone knows that they are in
Australia, but how many people know where they are in Australia? I know
where they are because I had to learn them for world geography in school.
