Well, there's 'Saal', 'Aal', and probably a few more. And a bunch of
geographical names like 'Saarland' and 'Aachen' (where I live).
As for 'a' for /a:/, there's quite a few - 'Rat', 'Rad', 'Tag', 'mag', etc. And
there's of course words with 'a'+eszed = /a:s/.
